Exposing 4 Shutter Myths

April 03, 2017

We spend a lot of time talking to homeowners about shutters in Washington DC.

And though it may come as a surprise, when we speak with people around DC, we hear a few shutter myths repeated. Let’s take a few moments to dispel some oft-repeated plantation shutter myths so you’re able to make the perfect choice for your house when it comes time for new window treatments.

Myth: Shutters Are Easy to DIY

Several home improvement projects can easily be done on your own in just one weekend. Installing shutters might not be one of them, though.

Putting in new shutters can be difficult from the start, as the measurements of the dimensions of your windows need to be very precise to ensure an easy and snug fit, as well as to ensure that your windows are able to open and close. Depending on what the shutters are made of, from Polywood® shutters to reclaimed wood shutters, lifting large shutter panels and installing them straight may be a difficult task. Unless every part of the process is done correctly, you may end up with uneven shutters or draftiness from ill-fitting weather-stripping.

Myth: Shutters Make Your Home Look Dim

New home designers might shy away from shutters, claiming shutters will make a space look dark or dim. This myth likely results from inexperience with shutters.

Think of it this way: light from the sun always comes through your windows from an angle. Shutters give you the ability to modify that angle by adjusting their louvers, granting you more effective control over level of light. And bear in mind, shutters are able to swing open all the way to let in all the light you might need.

Myth: Shutters Are Too Expensive

It’s true that shutters won’t be as cheap as discount rack blinds from a home improvement store. However this myth has to do with how you think about shutters. If you think about shutters simply as a basic decoration that isn’t expected to survive more than a few years, then yes, shutters are a tad expensive. But shutters are a lasting addition to your home, and come with several benefits: shutters are energy efficient and can lower heating and AC bills, they can increase your home value, and shutters are able to last generations, unlike blinds–which will need replacements repeatedly throughout the years.

Myth: Shutters Only Look Good In Old Homes

Perhaps the name “plantation shutters” has something to do with the myth that shutters are only good for old houses, but it definitely isn’t accurate. While shutters were frequently used in older home styles throughout the years, their straight, clean geometry and neutral shades allow them to fit in just as well with more fashionable, up-to-date designs. Plantation shutters are the ultimate in versatile window treatments.
