Washington DC Spring Cleaning Tips
Spring is almost here, Washington DC! If you’ve spent the last season huddled inside, now’s the perfect time to open those windows and begin thinking about spring cleaning. You may have your normal spring cleaning checklist, but all too frequently homeowners can skip over a few important items.
These are just a few tips to improve your spring cleaning from your floors to your shutters, so you’re able to enjoy our favorite season in Washington DC.
Spring Clean Your Windows
It’s normal to get out of bed in mid-March and realize that the subpar view out your window isn’t because of winter weather–it’s because of a filthy window. Spring is an ideal time to give your windows a deep clean. Get your awesome view back with these steps.
-
If your window opens, open it fully and remove any dirt and dust in the sill or track. Try first to clean out as much as you can with a dry cloth or small brush, then wash with warm soapy water and a cloth or brush to clean out the remainder. This will let your window operate easier, and make sure your window can completely close.
-
Spray down the glass with a glass cleaner. You can use either a cleaner you buy at the store, or make a homemade cleaner with two parts warm water and one part vinegar.
-
Swab the windows with a microfiber cloth. These cloths are best for cleaning glass and leave fewer streaks.
Don’t Neglect to Clean the Window Treatments
A clean, spotless glass window isn’t worth much the window treatment isn’t just as clean.
For fabric window treatments such as curtains or draperies, cleaning can be an issue. For thick fabric window coverings, take them off the wall and shake them outdoors to get rid of any loose debris, then leave them in the washer and run on cold water and air dry them. For thinner fabrics, you’ll want to be more delicate in how you handle them, so hand-wash them in a bathtub or sink.
Plantation shutters are by far the simplest window treatment to clean. Remove dust by wiping down with a microfiber cloth or duster. To spot clean, use a slightly damp cloth to take off the stain, then dry with a cloth.

Pay Attention to Your Appliances
Your fridge, oven and dishwasher are just as much furniture as appliances. Particularly with modern appliances like stainless steel appliances, looks are equally as important as functionality. Clean all the nooks and crannies of your appliances, and restore them to the condition they were when you first bought them.
Stainless steel appliances can be polished using a solution made of 1 teaspoon dish soap and 1 quart of warm water, cleaned with a wet cloth and air-dried.
Don’t Neglect a Single Surface
You’re likely going to spend some time on your walls and floors when you do spring clean, but don’t forget to spread some attention around to some of the most often neglected surfaces. These are just a couple of the areas that are often neglected when spring cleaning:
-
All handles or knobs that get touched a lot. This could be on the toilet, doors, or any other spot in the house.
-
Various shower surfaces, like the door, floor, and soap ledge.
-
The tops of ceiling fans.
-
Under your appliances - specifically the larger appliances such as the fridge164 and dishwasher.
